Educational Pursuit

I cannot tell you how many times I speak to a student who has absolutely no idea of why they are at University or Polytechnic. There is nothing wrong with not knowing what you want to do at School,
I don’t even have a major when I'm pursuing my Degree 2nd year because I can’t decide what I want to study but there is an essential difference between myself and the vast majority, the 85%. I want to learn. I want to sit in class for two hours and walk away smarter. I take whatever class interests me at the time of registration with no regard to a major because I simply want to learn as much as possible.

Here is my problem with some of the students now, not having a desire to be there or a purpose. An utter and complete waste of time, money, and resources. If you have no desire to sit in class, what is the worth of sitting in the back of class on simultaneously browsing on your laptop, texting your friends, eating or sleeping. Why would you waste four years of your life to embark on an educational journey you have no desire to be a part of? Not only do you waste the time of your professor, but more importantly you waste your own time. Times you’re never going to get back from the prime of your life. School surely is an amazing place and you can have attempt to have your 24-7 party experience but the end result is so depressing. Four years wasted in classes doing something you didn’t want to do in the first place.

Here is my solution, don’t go to Poly or Uni first. Go get a job, or go get a dream. Go get a bottom level job working at the mall, Chinese restaurant or mechanic shop and see how you like it. Than when you realize that you have an undying and burning passion to never work that sort of job again in your life? Now you enroll in Poly or Uni. An educational epiphany will ignite in your head and those same classes you would have been sleeping in a year prior will transform into your every desire. You’ll sit at the front of the class and ask so many questions the kids in the back will want to fight you afterward but low and behold you have a reason for being there!

I guess this goes back to my original problem with school, the fact that it is a “necessity,” something we are required to do in order to achieve success in out society now. It’s about time we threw that concept out of the window. It’s breeding a generation of poly age kids. who quite literally sleep walked through 3 years and 25,000 dollars and are graduating with degrees or diploma they didn’t want in the first place.

So to my Poly and Uni age peers, let’s wake up and take some pride in what you are doing or just leave School in general. I have 100 times more respect for the local kid who leaves after Secondary School to pursue a working career because he has no desire to go to School than for the kid who heads off to college because “Oh yeah I mean what else am I going to do?” maybe you should start to ask yourself what you want ...

  1. I couldn’t agree more. Attending a university should not determine how much success a person will have in the future and people should not feel pressured to attend.

  2. I feel you man, kids should not be pressured into collage, and truly there only a few jobs that actually require a degree

  3. I totally agree with you. I'm tired of hearing my friends complain to me saying they hate college. they just sit in class and do nothing and all i can say is then why do you go. i hate seeing kids not using their time wisely

  4. Everyone hates school until you realize why you're there. People that never realize the answer are the same people that end up hating their jobs too.
